Overview
Maelis is a mage of the Xalmyrran Council and the council member responsible for the archives. She sits in Aldar's council circle with Lyssara, Mirael, Brynor, and Kaelion, questions his plans for Eira and Lythariel, tracks threats from Aurion, Soltheris, the Zeydrith blast, and the Land of Darkness, and oversees repair work and citizen care in Irrathis. She is blunt and observant, often pressing Aldar, Lyssara, Mirael, Brynor, or Kaelion to speak plainly when strategy turns evasive.
Council Work
Maelis brings practical intelligence to council deliberations. Her work includes the divine-magic breathing device prepared for lower-level mages entering corrupted lands, tracking Xarion and Cassian in the library, hiring Jin Leiyun for discreet work requiring his power, and handling intelligence about the Zeydrith explosion and the risk that Xarion would attack Soltheris. After the cataclysm, she participates in the meeting where the council confronts its double memories, the quiet darkness around Velundra, and the lack of answers for Eira.
Magic and Death
At the tournament of champions, Maelis wins her match with intentional gestures and decisive magic. During the cataclysm in Irrathis, she uses barrier magic to shield dozens of people and guide civilians toward safe paths. She also uses healing magic on Kaelion and Aldar when cycle memories and the cataclysm leave them in pain.
After darkness creatures attack near Velundra, Maelis returns to the council hall fatally wounded, with essence leaking from her arm and shoulder. Darkness creatures swallow a village, follow her toward Velundra, consume most of Lythenmere Lake, and threaten Dravemir. Ilyra cannot heal the wound. Maelis dies with Aldar beside her, and her essence disperses back into the world. Her death leaves the council looking for new members alongside the seat left by Lyssara.
