The Xolterra War was a manufactured conflict among the Tenari of Thalcoris, centered on Xalatun. The moon goddess Xoh’Metztli controlled the Tenari through resonance magic, making them fight their own people while believing they faced an enemy. The fighting killed people and supplied their essence to essence towers.
Cause
Xoh’Metztli made an agreement with Xol’Zahir to supply him with essence. She feared that he would engulf Xolterra in darkness and cycles like those of Xalmyrra, and used her control of the Tenari to maintain the arrangement.
Discovery and Fighting
Eira and Lythariel reached Xalatun and found Tenari dying around its essence towers. Kaelion’s guards also turned on their own people. Once free of the goddess’s control, Kaelion recognized that they had been fighting one another and escaped with Splin.
The controlled Zayren and Razen attacked Eira. Lythariel's darkness attacks collapsed a nearby essence tower. Her clash with Razen's temporal magic caused a devastating shockwave, leaving much of Xalatun ruined. She rescued Eira and took her south.
End of the War
In Aurivallis, Cassian encountered Xoh’Metztli through her wielder, Meliora. Meliora’s own mind asked him to end the goddess’s control. A warning in The Eleven Stories of Old explained why killing the wielder alone would fail: Xoh’Metztli could simply choose another.
Cassian killed Meliora with spikes from his shield, then trapped and destroyed the goddess’s escaping essence. Meliora thanked him as she died. The voices controlling the Tenari stopped, freeing people in Aurivallis and Thalcoris. Tazarin, whose shield had protected his mind from the control, could then act openly to help his people.
Aftermath
Xalatun needed food, water, healing and rebuilding. Tazarin joined Kaelion and the surviving mages in the relief work. Amaril healed the wounded, Zayren moved rubble, Razen redirected the river, and Splin brought supplies. Two days of coordinated work began the city’s recovery while its people came to terms with the control and the deaths it had caused.

Xoh’Metztli made an agreement with Jorhan, known in Xolterra as Xol’Zahir, to supply him with essence. She feared that he would engulf Xolterra in darkness and cycles like those of Xalmyrra. The towers drained essence into the Void to sustain Jorhan’s people and their world; deaths in the war gave them more to collect.

Jorhan had threatened the island while shaping Xalmyrra’s storms, although he and his companions could not enter it. Xoh’Metztli offered to keep its people under control if he left them alone.
