Tenari

people

The Tenari are the people of Thalcoris, in northern Xolterra. They descend from migrants who left Xalmyrra. Magical instruction and worship of the Sun and Moon have shaped their culture. Their cities include Tequaltor, Xalatun, Chalxata and Aurivallis.

Appearance and dress

Tenari commonly have darker, warmer skin tones and vivid yellow or red eyes. Their fitted clothes use geometric patterns, often stitched along the hems in pink and yellow. Moon priestesses wore silver and blue.

Magic and instruction

Magical education includes children and adults. All Tenari learned to fight at the Tequaltor War School. Students practice in open arenas, learning to fight through sparring and instruction. Divine barriers contain the duels, and healers treat injured combatants.

Resonance magic is common in Thalcoris. The priests and priestesses of Aurivallis traveled throughout the nation, singing with magic that can be beautiful in ceremony and destructive in battle. Their visits could bring a city to a standstill as people stopped to listen. Many local mages wield two schools of magic; aether and divine magic are also prominent.

Gods and leadership

Xoh’Tenol is widely revered as the Sun, while worship of Xoh’Metztli, the Moon, was centered in Aurivallis. Both were honored throughout Thalcoris. Aurivallis had its own government, and the city-states answer to Emperor Tazarin.

The Sun’s choice of a shard wielder determined the expected successor to the emperor. The chosen person could be an outsider: Tazarin had come from Xalmyrra, and the Tenari recognized Kaelion as their future emperor when Xoh’Tenol chose him. Kaelion left Thalcoris rather than taking the throne.

History

Migration and settlement

The Tenari’s ancestors passed through a gate in western Erenmyr to reach Xolterra. The settlers who founded Thalcoris accepted help from the Sun and Moon against the darkness. Other migrants rejected divine rule, went south and founded Thalassai. Isolation from Xalmyrra eventually made their ancestral homeland seem mythical to younger Tenari.

Moon control and liberation

Xoh’Metztli ruled through the voices of her followers, including the singing Moon priestesses. Many Tenari followed her commands without questioning them. Tazarin protected his mind with a shield and was never under her control. He killed a previous Moon wielder, but the goddess chose another and the control continued.

The war around Xalatun pitted Tenari against their own soldiers under the illusion of an outside enemy. The dead were gathered near essence towers. Xoh’Metztli arranged for their essence to feed the darkness, claiming that this bargain protected Xolterra from destruction.

Cassian broke the control by destroying Xoh’Metztli’s essence within her wielder, killing both. The affected population collapsed with pain in their heads before recovering. Surviving mages then cleared rubble, healed the injured and worked to rebuild Xalatun and redirect its river.

Relations with Thalassai

After their liberation, the Tenari agreed to lend aether and divine mages to Thalassai. A new road was being built between Aetherion and Thalcoris to support their growing cooperation.

Sun reverence continued after the Moon’s control ended. When Xoh’Tenol visited Thalcoris in a physical body, citizens bowed to her. At the palace, she received a local pale golden yellow tunic with a pink sash, matching pants and a crown of yellow and pink feathers.
