Isandriel entrusted it to Thalion in Rimvold, suggesting it might help Helena control her growing power. He warned that taking it while too weak would kill her. She should first approach Zero or Ignatius in essence.

When Helena’s power became dangerously unstable, she used magic to contain it, but attempts to heal her failed. Thalion decided he could no longer wait. He placed the shard in her palm and urged her to channel essence into it. The crystal sank into her hand, and she grew calm. She recovered, but continued training to learn how to control her power.
Helena kept the artifact hidden to conceal that she wielded a shard. It initially held little essence, although it still helped stabilize her power.

After years stranded in the void, Thalena spent her remaining essence to create a copy that could seek help for her companions. The original retained the star shard. The copy remembered carrying it, but had no physical shard in her palm.
It was this copy who worked with Amos in the other Valrindor and helped send information into the past. Amos found no shard in her hand and identified her body as pure essence. Creating the copy had left the original shard nearly empty.
Ozaith restored the artifact to its original state within Thalena’s hand when he put her body back together. Afterward, examinations still found its reserve nearly empty. Thalena kept the shard and could refill it with essence from the world or from people who chose to share theirs.
Crystal structure
Isandro, Amos and Eamon examined the restored shard with scanners. The results strongly suggested quasicrystals, although the machines could not read every detail. Eamon described it as a crystal circuit whose shape was itself the code. Amos called it a machine, material and instruction at once.
The shard lacked a coherent identity of its own. Thalena identified herself as that identity, and the researchers agreed. Eamon thought infused essence either gained a will or followed another, with Thalena’s will directing this shard. He also suggested that her urge to refill it might arise partly from instructions designed to keep it functioning. Thalena began questioning whether it had influenced her choices.
Eamon and Mike continued studying quasicrystals and their possible use in essence technology. By the Valrindor Council meeting, the researchers had identified the shard’s structure, but Thalena still did not fully understand it.
Thalena’s account
In Thalena’s Shores of Eternity, Lothar examines the star shard and an image of it made by Eamon and Mike. He thinks its goal is self-preservation. Thalena later repeats that interpretation while seeking a way to save what remains of her world.
