Quasicrystals are crystal structures with ordered patterns that do not repeat. They are found in Thalena's star shard and Nahm's geometric shard, which Virel wields.
Structure and function
Thalena's shard acts as a crystal circuit. Its shape carries the instructions, combining material, machinery and instruction in one structure. Her shard has no god of its own. Thalena supplies its identity, and essence infused into the structure follows her will.
Nahm's patterns also govern his functioning. Thalena recognized the same kind of structure when she compared her shard with the one in Virel's palm.
Study
During Thalena's visit to the Malverand Intergalactic Empire, Isandro, Eamon and Amos studied her shard with a scan taken while she suppressed her essence. The device could not read every detail, but identified quasicrystals with strong confidence.
Eamon suspected that the shard's instructions encouraged Thalena's need to refill it with essence. He and Mike also discussed using similar crystals to combine essence and technology.
Thalena's account
In Thalena's Shores of Eternity, Lothar began decoding the star and geometric shards. Thalena planned to use their structure to strengthen the veil around Valrindor.
