Overview

Kaldspire is the capital of Vintergard, a cold mountain nation in Valrindor whose people are hardy and practice runic magic. The city is built at high elevation near the mountains. During Eira, Lythariel, and Silas's crossing of Vintergard, Svanhild leads from Kaldspire and sends Halgarr to check the northern pass.

Geography & Layout

The approach to Kaldspire descends along a winding road near eastern cliffs, with the ocean far below and a desert nation visible in the distance. Travelers pass cold heights, scattered forest, snow-covered plains, and city gates before entering a city busier than expected for its remote position.

Travelers move around Kaldspire on long rune-inscribed planks set in carved road lanes. Large beasts pull carts with broad rune-inscribed harnesses. Svanhild hosts visitors in a luxurious hall or domain inside the city, where people defer to her authority.

History

By 2103 AX, after Uriandel's dominion splinters into smaller nations, Skarnheim maintains a good relationship with Vintergard, especially Kaldspire.

During the Fall of Malverand, Benedict and Sylvia pose as independent leaders and diplomats from Kaldspire of Vintergard. Raphael questions what mages from Kaldspire are doing in Crosford, and Thalion Zenith later worries about Raphael traveling to Kaldspire and Ashenford.

During Eira's crossing of Vintergard, she, Lythariel, and Silas travel toward Kaldspire, meet Halgarr on the road, and use rune-like planks to reach the city faster. Inside Kaldspire, Svanhild detects darkness magic on Eira and Lythariel, discusses Xalmyrra, cycles, darkness magic, Varnhallow, and Varnhallow's strange attacks on Skarnheim with them, then allows them to continue toward Thundermarch by way of Skarnheim. A later windweaver route passes within sight of Kaldspire.
