Origins and Chronasis Work
Deylin Varos is an Earth-born mage originally named David Vorrel. He becomes a famed level nine temporal mage, scholar, artifact hunter, ship captain, and traveler between Xalmyrran cycles. His reputation as a captain and artifact hunter produces a string of public epithets, including Captain Deylin Varos, Seeker of Lost Ages, Artifact Hunter Extraordinaire, Master of Time, Master of the Seven Seas, and Lord of the Seven Seas.
Deylin is the husband of Ilyra and the father of Eira. Eira inherits temporal magic from him, and his cycle-crossing history lets Xelthys and Hrzai place him around Eira as they try to break the cycles around Xalmyrra. In Thalassai, Cassian appoints him a chronarc of Chronasis, where Deylin oversees agriculture and technological research.
Appearance and Manner
Deylin's apparent age shifts across his history. David Vorrel leaves Earth as an older man, arrives in Erenmyr in a younger body after crossing cycles, and is again an older man in later Xalmyrran history.
Deylin often moves with a high stride, raised chin, dramatic bows, quick smiles, and a deliberately casual confidence even in dangerous or impossible situations.
Personality
Deylin is curious, theatrical, talkative, evasive, and adventurous under pressure. He jokes under pressure, answers direct questions sideways, and uses humor to keep others moving through situations that would otherwise paralyze them.
Beneath the performance, Deylin is an exacting observer of magic, people, and patterns. He detects abnormalities in timerifts, barriers, gates, and essence faster than most around him. Thalena trains him for timerift work, Cassian sends him to bring the Varnhallow group home, and Cyrena waits for Cassian and Kaelion before continuing gate work with him.
Abilities, Skills and Magic
Deylin is a level nine temporal mage. His techniques include blinking, temporal barriers, temporal bubbles, temporal sensing, and the manipulation of unstable timerift or gate phenomena. He can perceive and adjust temporal barriers that others struggle to read, synchronize the boundary of Varnhallow, and keep void breaches stable with Sigurd and Lunorax.
Deylin also has strong direct perception of essence and enough magical range to use non-temporal spells, including fire magic. Eira inherits temporal magic and some fire magic from him.
His Earth background gives him a practical understanding of technology. In Thalassai, he applies that knowledge to chronarc research, communications, agriculture, and gate work; he studies how gates stabilize matter and essence during travel.
Background and History
Deylin begins life on Earth as David Vorrel, a scientist and professor living near Lake Lucerne in the Alps. In 2040, he studies a persistent black fog with advanced equipment, detects Xytheron-12B6, and uses a neural wave emitter to push the experiment further. The work tears him through a timerift involving Abraxas and Thalion Zenith and deposits him in a dying, darkness-consumed cycle of Xalmyrra.
David survives there with Hrzai in the form of the old golden mage. Hrzai teaches him Xalmyrran, essence, and magic over roughly two years. Temporal magic becomes second nature to him, and Hrzai makes him the hope of the world in her cycle plan. When the dying cycle collapses, David follows her command to blink beyond it and emerges in a restored Erenmyr in a younger body. When villagers ask his name, he chooses the name Deylin Varos.
Deylin builds a legend across Xalmyrra as a scholar, artifact hunter, ship captain, and temporal mage. He bonds with Glin, plants artifacts and texts for Eira on the old mage's orders, marries Ilyra across more than one cycle, and carries Cassian through a cycle collapse.
After Deylin slips from Silas's grasp in the void, he emerges through the Chronasis gate into Thalassai. There, Deylin studies the gate with Cyrena, warns Cassian and Kaelion that the gate interior is empty void, and supplies parts of Eira's two-world origin. Cassian later appoints Deylin and Ilyra as chronarcs and gives them permanent residence in Stella Aeterna.
Thalena sends Deylin to Varnhallow after a timerift attack strikes Stella Aeterna. Inside Varnhallow, he accompanies Isandriel, Virel, Anshar, Felix, Lysander, and Zhang as the anomaly collapses. He synchronizes the temporal barrier so the group can escape, but the return leads into the attack outside Arcanis Village and Thalena's disappearance into the void.
After the attack outside Arcanis Village, Thalena and Silas tear open the void while Deylin and Sigurd cast the timerift loop that sends selected people into Varnhallow. Lunorax and Horol’Khai guide the timing. Afterward, Deylin remains with the group near the Chronasis gate until Hadrian and Astryx pull them back through.

- Eira: Deylin and Ilyra's daughter. Eira inherits Deylin's temporal magic, carries the spiral shard, and becomes the person Hrzai's cycle plan depends on.
- Glin: Deylin's bonded giant frog and later astragon companion.
- Thalena: Thalena shares temporal magic, gate research, Earth history, and Varnhallow-loop knowledge with Deylin. She secretly shapes parts of David Vorrel's Earth life before he becomes Deylin.
- Cassian: Deylin brings Cassian through the cycle as an infant on Hrzai's orders. Cassian later appoints Deylin as chronarc of Chronasis.
- Hrzai: Hrzai trains David while appearing to him as the old golden mage, guides his cycle crossings, and directs his cycle work for Eira.
