Overview
Kaldaryn City, also called Kaldaryn, is the terraced capital of the Kaldaryn protectorate and later nation in central Valrindor. Garrik names both the city and the polity after Khoradyn asks him to lead the people gathered around their new settlement.
Garrik governs from the city, shelters displaced people there, and uses it as the military and diplomatic base for the Kaldaryn Peace Campaigns across western and central Valrindor.
Layout and Architecture
Kaldaryn City stands at the foot of a craggy mountain range near an essence tower. It is a high-altitude city with cold air, snow, frosty peaks, mountain approaches, and guard towers among the heights. Hengzhou lies northwest of Kaldaryn, with Maraveth beyond Hengzhou.
The city is built in terraced layers and protected by massive dark stone walls. Its angular stone-and-wood buildings blend Irrathis-style elemental construction with the rugged, altitude-suited style of Varentis. Streets, markets, gates, public squares, residences, elevated skyship platforms, and later train lines form its civic spaces.
Civic Life
Kaldaryn City gathers refugees, migrants, soldiers, mages, traders, and engineers from across Valrindor. Brown and earth-toned Kaldaryn clothing is common in the city. Local markets, diners, residences, and meeting halls operate near soldiers, guards, and strategy meetings.
Air and fire mages control snow and cold. Engineers and mages build and repair skyships, essence engines, and train tracks for Thalena's Valrindor rail project. The city also has formal duel rules, guards, scouts, watchtowers, and a government residence used for strategy councils and high-level meetings.
History
Kaldaryn City is founded after Khoradyn, Garrik, and their followers gather survivors, allies, and mages in Valrindor. Earth and water mages raise the first structures with unusual speed, and the settlement quickly becomes a home for people from Calthorpe, Ashenford, Skarnheim, Bjarnholt, Morozkaya, Drozhvenya, Hengvaris, Linsothar, and Haverloch.
Khoradyn asks Garrik to lead the people. Khoradyn continues ranging across Valrindor. Garrik names the new polity the Kaldaryn Protectorate and names its capital Kaldaryn City. The city then grows near the mountains and the essence tower as Kaldaryn builds alliances, protects city-states, and brings much of western Valrindor under Garrik's control.
Soldiers, high-level mages, engineers, and allied visitors gather in the city. Kaldaryn City anchors skyship procurement from Brighthaven, train planning, mage training, and staging for the Maraveth War, the Siege of Omberion, and the Battle for Cyndarel.
After Thalena's disappearance and Raphael's return, Eira, Kaelion, Xarion, and their allies travel to Kaldaryn City by Brighthaven skyship. Soon afterward, Azarion, Eliona, and Raphael-aligned hostile skyships attack the city, killing civilians and mages, cutting a deep path through Kaldaryn, and leaving parts of the city under reconstruction.
When Azarion's hurricane threatens central Valrindor, Kaldaryn City's defenders evacuate people into sinking structures and lower the city underground. Earth mages reinforce the underground space with pillars and sealed earthworks. Air mages move defenders safely. After the storm passes, the city is raised above ground again.
