Arcanis Village

Overview

Arcanis Village was a small Haverloch settlement near the Navan Sea, Valalav, and the Varnhallow border. It was named for Arcanis, the older Malverand inventor.

The village was destroyed after Varnhallow collapsed. The ruined area later became the Battle of Valalav battlefield.

Geography & Layout

Arcanis Village's northern outskirts bordered open fields, farmland, fences, forest, and the edge of Varnhallow's temporal bubble. To temporal mages, the barrier was a vast blue bubble. Crossing it placed a traveler inside Varnhallow.

The village had a central square with a massive tree and a wooden bench beneath it. It also had at least one inn, fields worked by lesser mages, and a slight mound with a door leading down to the buried gate chamber.

Notable Features

The buried gate was a half-circle structure marked with symbols. Its underground chamber had essence lights, reinforced construction, and a visible blue hue from Varnhallow's temporal barrier.

Society & Culture

The village had active streets, worked fields, local spellwork, and an unassuming inn. Children played in the streets, local mages used small spells for irrigation and field work, and the inn housed travelers such as Alistair and Helena. The villagers welcomed Alistair and allowed him to study the buried object beneath the mound.

Arcanis Village belonged to Haverloch. Jarin visited the village when he wanted to relax.

History

Jarin brings Helena to Arcanis Village, where Varnhallow's temporal bubble borders the settlement and the buried gate sits beneath a slight mound. The village sign uses both Arcanis Village and Village Arcanis.

Alistair later travels along the Navan Sea and reaches Arcanis Village. Strange phenomena north of the settlement and a buried object under a mound draw his attention, and he studies the site for months. He locates the half-circle gate, moves it to the edge of the temporal bubble with local mages, and opens a small void through it. The gate opening begins his contact with the void entity Oktlix and leads to his hollow-body state.

Helena later returns to the village, stays at the inn, and enters Varnhallow through the temporal barrier. Two white-clad mages attack her inside the barrier, and she escapes back to the village side.

In the later Varnhallow investigation, Virel's group reaches Arcanis Village. Isaac and Lysander are beneath the central tree, where Nahm confronts Isaac. The group later uses the village area as its route back after Varnhallow collapses.

When the group emerges after Varnhallow's collapse, an enemy ambush destroys Arcanis Village. The site becomes scorched ground, craters, lava, shattered trees, and trenches where water from the Navan Sea is dragged inland. The buried void gate remains there afterward, and Alistair still intends to inspect it.
