Copy magic is a rare origin-magic ability to reproduce another mage's spells or magic patterns. Abraxas trains Aurelia in the same discipline as mirror magic.
Known Users
Barachiel is the primary ancient copy-magic user. His ability reproduces magic and gives Arcanis the basis for spell-containment devices able to hold spells or raw essence.
Aurelia uses the same discipline. She copies spells from Gren and Viviana, uses copied magic to hold a dangerous spell in her body, and belongs to a small Myrravel tradition of similar users. Under Abraxas's Oracle training, she uses the ability as mirror magic, copying the reversal spell and mirroring one of the Oracles' strongest temporal mages. Her power comes through the source and her former place among Abraxas's oracles.
Copying Process
Copy magic uses reflective nanites derived from ancient spell technology. In the Malverand Intergalactic Empire, reflective nanites copy and alter ancient magic. In Valrindor, the source and essence exposure transform the same particle family into origin magic.
In a compatible user, the particles respond to intent and magical perception, read or preserve spell instructions, and reproduce the spell as copied or mirrored magic. Barachiel has an unusually strong natural version. Aurelia's Oracle-taught mirror magic copies the reversal spell and temporal magic.
Rules & Properties
- Copy magic can copy or mirror spells and magic patterns, including specialized powers such as temporal magic and essence reversal.
- Copying requires contact with the spell, direct magical perception, training, or close observation. Barachiel senses his copy magic inside Eira. Aurelia copies spells directly from nearby mages and mirrors an Oracle temporal mage to escape into Varnhallow.
- The ability can strain or endanger the user. Barachiel has limits when handling copied spells. Aurelia survives by combining copied power with divine healing as she carries the reversal spell.
- The ability overlaps with older practical unique magic.
- Machines and cores can also copy spells. Those devices are dangerous because they can repeat copied spells at scale.
History & Origins
Barachiel uses copy magic as emperor of the Malverand Empire. Aurelia, a Myrravel princess, later uses the same discipline; her power comes through the source and her training comes from Abraxas's Oracles. Isandriel compares Aurelia's ability to Barachiel's and considers Barachiel's possible Myrravel origin.
Aurelia uses mirror magic to copy the reversal spell, hold it inside herself, and later pass it to Helena through inheritance. In doing so, she moves a Keeper-only origin spell out of the Oracles' control.
