Origins
The Land of Darkness transforms people and animals caught within it. The darkness takes the mind first, then the body. Exiled criminals, explorers and lost animals became darkness creatures. Kheran became a harbinger.
Corruption outside the Land of Darkness can also transform living beings. In early Xalmyrra, an atraxi corrupted a village while diverting its river and building a dam. Hundreds of inhabitants became ebon wraiths. Ordinary animals overtaken by corruption become beasts of shadow.
Activity
Jorhan summoned stalkers and Kheran to accompany Eira near Atraxis Prime. The stalkers were passive around her; one approached her gently when she was distressed.

Thalena's account
In Thalena's Shores of Eternity, an expedition beneath Ithyreon encountered unusually large stalkers and two-legged beasts with claws, short wings and black-and-green blades. One sliced through a combined vector-and-air attack and killed Astheron through his cosmic barrier. Another breathed purple flames that bypassed Virel's shield. The expedition suffered devastating losses, and Seralyth escaped to warn the Council. A separate beast in southern Lumeria killed several high-level mages before being destroyed.
