Threat to Ships and Fliers

Colossal fish are immense aquatic beasts in Lake Eternity and the waters near the Plains of Eternity. They are powerful enough to threaten ships, exhausted flying mages, and even high-level expeditions moving through the region's unstable essence.

Description

The largest encountered specimens dwarf ships. One fish that attacks an Ereshval ship is two or three times the ship's size, with iridescent scales, fins slicing through the water, and immense essence. Lake Eternity also holds fish as large as houses, with mirror-like fins and eyes visible from shore or deck.

Behavior & Ecology

Colossal fish can burst from deep water, overturn ships, close on fliers above the lake, and swim beside fleets. Smaller versions are part of the food supply around the plains. The ship-attacking specimen is much larger.

One massive fish-like creature studies Eira during a descent into Lake Eternity and drifts away. Another powerful fish moves beneath Isandriel's fleet and lets the ships continue.

History & Lore

A massive fish attacks Pontarius's expedition near the haze of the Plains of Eternity, where magic also works less reliably. During Isandriel's later expedition, a fish overturns an Ereshval ship before Vashir and water mages aboard the ships right the vessel and rescue the displaced mages.

Thamrielle later rescues two drained fliers from Lake Eternity as colossal fish leap from the water and snap at them. The Celestial Games later include colossal fish among eligible beasts for a taming challenge, and another proposed trial asks competitors to catch a fish from Lake Eternity.
