Battle of Hengzhou

event

The Battle of Hengzhou was a shaper attack on Hengzhou, the capital of Hengvaris. Khoradyn and Garrik brought their army to repel the attackers, but most of the city was destroyed. Survivors joined them on the march east and helped establish Kaldaryn.

Background

Zharrek and the shapers of Shroudvale pursued Malcairn after his escape. Zharrek accused him of stealing their shard and ordered his capture. Zal'therak directed him through Hengvaris so that Khoradyn and Garrik's army could deal with his pursuers. Malcairn warned the leaders that the shapers were attacking Hengvaris. They were already traveling in that direction, and Khoradyn sent Kren ahead with an elite detachment while the main army followed.

The Assault and Aftermath

Vianna and her family had settled in Hengzhou after fleeing Brighthaven. Her parents, Marcus and Vivian, and her brother Julian went to fight while she hid inside their home. Quakes and destructive magic shook the city.

When she emerged, most of Hengzhou lay in ruins and the shapers were gone. Khoradyn and Garrik's soldiers and mages lifted wreckage and searched for survivors. Kren and Zhang invited Vianna to join them.

Vianna believed that her parents and brother had died. She traveled east with the survivors who followed the army, but Julian had escaped and later found her in Kaldaryn. Garrik healed Vianna after she attempted to take her own life during the march. The army then founded Kaldaryn City as a home for its followers.

Isandriel, then known as Isaac, had separately asked Garrik to steer the army toward Hengzhou. He had sent Vianna and her family there after their escape from Brighthaven and wanted to keep her alive. He joined the army in disguise, concealing his name and full strength.

The Assault

Vianna's parents, Marcus and Vivian, and her brother Julian went to fight while she hid inside their home. Quakes and destructive magic shook the city. By the time the army reached Hengzhou, its defenders were falling, buildings had been leveled, and fissures and meteor craters scarred the streets.

Khoradyn raised immense stone monoliths as he led the counterattack. Kren and Zhang fought the shapers, while Garrik and Isaac shielded and healed survivors and cleared debris. Their army was strong enough to handle the attackers without the two divine mages revealing their full power. As the battle turned, divine mages searched the wreckage for survivors.

Isaac sensed Vianna and left before she saw him, asking Garrik to care for her. Garrik greeted her without revealing that Isaac had already told him about her.

Aftermath

Vianna believed that her parents and brother had died. She joined the survivors traveling east with the army, but Julian had escaped and later found her in Kaldaryn. Garrik healed Vianna after she attempted to take her own life during the march, and Kren kept watch over her afterward.
