After the northern wall was overrun and many mages died, Tharezh approved an expedition into the plains in exchange for Kallion training Ereshval's temporal mages. He ordered Drashir and Vashir to evacuate the northern border, then appointed skilled mages to the expedition.
He later allowed Thalion's army to stay in Qarezh in return for work for the city. Thalion urged him to evacuate in case the guardians attacked. Tharezh welcomed Benedict's proposed improvements to production, security and underground water distribution.
