Overview
Decimus is the leader of Pyrenis's military during Helena's long undercover stay in the city. He trains and evaluates recruits in the arena, uses strong lightning magic, and eventually accepts Helena as an officer under him.
Character
When Helena first enters the military, Decimus is complacent, showy, and patronizing about women fighting in Pyrenis's military. He spends much of his time slouched with his officers, then grandstands for recruits during public demonstrations. His lightning bolts are powerful enough to blacken the ground and shatter divine shields. Helena still judges Pyrenis's military as weak.
When Helena leaves Pyrenis years later, Decimus welcomes her, says he is happy to have known her, admits she proved women can be strong, and acknowledges her skill as her own.
History
Decimus tests Helena shortly after her arrival in Pyrenis. She redirects a lightning bolt from him past his ear, shocking the arena into silence and beginning her rise through the local military. During the following years, Decimus and the archon are left trying to explain Helena's hidden sabotage of Ozaith shrines, festivals, and records.
A visibly older Decimus leads preparations for another Ozaith festival before Helena burns the largest library in Pyrenis. He later retires, and Helena visits him before leaving the city. Rumors of Decimus's death in Pyrenis circulate after Helena settles in Terranova.
